Internship at Studio Sander Mulder and WSI Models
Februari 2017 / July 2012

In the third year of industrial design the second internship is held, In this period I have been an intern at both Studio Sander Mulder in Eindhoven and WSI Models in Woudenberg.
Due to unforeseen circumstances at Studio Sander Mulder my internship there was shortened and so I completed the second half of the period at WSI Models.

Studio Sander Mulder is product design studio established in Eindhoven by Sander Mulder in 2002 bringing his idea's to reality.
Currently the studio is run by two people with 2 interns working there most of the time. Being an international operating design studio that works on their own projects of for clients. The products range from furniture to innovative design, with many unique designs, idea's and products that you can not find anywhere else.

WSI is originally a Dutch company which emerged from Tematoys, established in 1994. The scale models of Tematoys were appreciated by the transport companies which used them as promotional gifts for their clients and employees. Collecting Tematoys scale models became a new trend in The Netherlands and far beyond. In 2006, Tematoys merged into WSI and this was also the beginning of production in China. Customers wanted more and more realistic models and China gave the opportunity to ensure this.
Currently WSI is THE brand for high-quality scale models in the 1:50 scale and is a leader in the international market for scale models of trucks, trailers, cranes and earthmoving vehicles. the main office is located in Woudenberg, with around 30 employees working there daily and 350 employees working on the production in China. The main office serves the purposes of distribution, marketing, sales, design and new projects. The factory in China produces the products and creates the molds.

In this page I will show a few of things I have worked on during this internship, note that some of the things that I have worked on are confidential, so they are not listed here.
Studio Sander Mulder
I have worked on a diversity of different projects during my short time at Studio Sander Mulder, including production, designing, modelling, prototyping, renovating, creating manuals and video's.

One of the unique aspects of this internship was that the company works with Rhinoceros, which gave me the opportunity to learn the new software and work in it for the projects.
Rhinoceros

The studio uses Rhinoceros as CAD software which gave me a great opportunity to expand my CAD skills. During my time at the studio I have worked on diverse projects and have gained good skills in Rhinoceros.
The primary project I have worked on was to digitize the computer numerical control machine (CNC) they were building in the studio. Other projects I have worked on included digitizing client specific projects.

The CNC project

Custom design
Other projects

Creating and edditing a video for one of their products
Writing user manuals for their products

Production, prototyping and shipping work

Building and installing the studio and showroom
WSI Models
Main project: Wood Models package design
My main project during my time at WSI was to
design the packaging for a new collection of
products under the name Wood Models

The models

The First test

The main concept I created was to fasten the model on a cardboard inner box, and put it in a perfect fit box. But I decided to step away from this idea because there was a cheaper option.
The final product was to use a perfect fitting and thick box and fill up the spaces with cardboard strips. This is realised by working together with three other companies

Final models

Graphic design of the box
Illustrator projects

A lot of my time spend at WSI Models has been spent working in Illustrator on diverse projects.
For the production in China they need to know the design, the positions and the parts numbers so that they can create work plan and new molds. When this process is finished they can start the prototyping.
These drawings are set up at our main office and it was one of my primary tasks during my internship, I have also added some new parts for upcoming models to the library.

Graphic design for a new product
Other projects

In cooperation with Polesie toys in Russia WSI also helps develop toy models, for this I created parts of designs in Solidworks for injection molding.

I have also helped with many other projects, including creating new systems for standardization, photoshopping photo's to be used on the websites, folders and boxing and helping out at the WSI XXL event.
Reflection
Being able to work at 2 different companies during one internship period has been a great experience, as you will have a bigger diversity of projects and less repetitive work. I have been able to develop a huge amount of skills during this period of 5 months which means I am ready for every aspect of a new project. I have worked on a higher level then I have ever worked before and I have learned to work on a professional level. It was a great period and I had great ratings from the people who guided me.
