Internship at DTILE

In the second year of industrial design the first internship is held, In this period I have been an intern at DTILE in Velp.
DTILE is a company established by Erik-Jan Kwakkel and Peter van der Jagt after they got a hold of machine that could realise their ideas. The idea was making 3-dimensional tiles, who could tile product in all directions, after a while they expended this with functional tiles.
The company is at this time located in Velp, existing of an office and a workplace/factory with around ten employees working part or fulltime.
Besides the employees there also were three other interns during my internship. Two others were also industrial designers from my education and the other was studying mechanical engineering.
In this page I will show a few of things I have worked on during this internship, because a lot of the things that I have worked on are confidential I won't be able to show everything.
Solidworks assignments
During my internship I had alot different assignments, for these assignments I have worked alot with different programs including Solidworks.
A big part of the the internship I have been working on molds for new tiles, for this I have used Solidworks to model them.
At Schiphol airport they wanted to use our tiles to tile a new building inside the airport next to the American flights, for this they needed new tiles with a weird angle.
My part in this was that these tiles and their molds needed to be modelled.
A total of 3 new tiles and oven supports were needed to be modelled by me.

Besides the new tiles for Schiphol I have also made three molds of the already existing functional tiles, the ventilation tile, the towel hook tile and the grip tile.

Sketch-Up assignments
A big part of the internship was also made out of sketchup assignments, because the cliënts need to know the amount of tiles they need for their designs and want to know how it would look.
Most of these assignments were for kitchens, bathrooms and for catering.

Near the end of the internship I got the asssignemnt to apply Dtile in a new Sector, for this I choose to create new holds to be used to open or close things, and worked on ideas for a support for the elder or disabled people.

Besides these assignments I did alot of different works in company like helping in the production, preparing machines and helping with the internal moving of the office.

Reflection
This was my first internship and after struggling the first few weeks I learned and improved a lot in how I should act towards a company and what I can do.
I spend less time than I should have and wanted on free assignments and did alot of the assignments directly for the company, so I didn't had enough opportunities to work outside of the box and that is something I want to work on in the next couple of years and future internships.
Besides that I have improved in communication and professionalism. I feel good about this internship as I have been able to improve in skills and learned a lot.
